The islet of Monemvasia used to be a promontory that was harshly cut off the mainland after a devastating earthquake in 375 A.D. It has a height of 300 m and it is made entirely out of steep colorful rock. Slowly, it was evolved into a famous castle town and became the strategic base of trade and the military fleet of the Byzantine empire. Many people, including the Venetians and the Turks conquered it and have put their stamp on it.
Starting our tour will enter into the castle town through the main gateway, stepping straight into the world of medieval past. We will explore the romantic alleys and discover Byzantine monuments and buildings with Venetian and Ottoman elements.
Next we will see the panoramic views of the Myrtoo Sea stretching below the impressive rock, while stories of myths and knights travel us to other times.
